Leaves: Leaves compound (pinnate) or simple. Opposite or sometimes alternate. Leaflets opposite or nearly so. Leaflet surfaces usually glandular punctate. Petiolate. Stipules absent.

Flowers: Flowers bisexual (perfect) or staminate, rarely pistillate or neuter. Calyx of 5 sepals. Corolla of 5 petals. Stamens 5, alternating with staminodes 5. Ovary superior, 5-celled, usually pubescent; ovules usually 5–6 per cell; style base with 5 glands.

Fruit: Capsules pericarp somewhat woody; often tuberculate. Seeds flattened; elliptic; winged; without endosperm.
